Hi, I'm Scott and I'm a Madonnaholic

Pardon me whilst I bore you with this very very very long post. :)

Madonna Maniac that I am, I pre-ordered her new CD, Hard Candy from Amazon.com.  And naturally I went for the "Candy Box Special Edition". Unfortunately it's not yet arrived (I'm hoping for today).

I own all of her CDs save for the collections/compilations From those I just have the singles for each of the previously unreleased tracks (no need to pay for something I otherwise already  owned).

Oh wait.. I do have You Can Dance  (and come to think of it, it was the first CD I ever bought. I bought it the same day I got my first CD player back in 1987).

Anywho, I remember back in the day, before most people (save for those who went clubbing regularly or listened to "Urban Contemporary" radio) ever heard of her, I had her first LP (this was a few years before CDs mind you). Holiday still remains my fave track from it. It's a classic.

And amazingly she turns 50(!) this August. And she's till got it (imnsho).

So in her honor, I present my MP3 playlist from yesterday. :D

The Grammy Awards

Note: You can also read (and comment on) this entry on my "official" blog.

I almost never watch them. I think the last time I saw them was whatever year OutKast was on performing  Hey Ya!.

Most of the show generally bores me to tears. I love music, but the show still bores me.  And of course there are the categories that I don't care about (e.g. Country).

On the other hand, every year I find out what I missed; and inevitably there were one or two performances I would have loved to have seen.  One of theses days I'll get smart, record the show, wait a day or two till I hear what was good and then fast forward to those parts.

This time I wish I'd seen The Time with Rhianna.  For those that saw the show, I'm actually more interested in the former than the latter (although I do like Rhianna). However, Jam and Lewis are musical geniuses. And Morris Day (and his "attitude") always cracked me up.

If The Time ever has (another?) a reunion tour, I'd be among the first to buy tickets.

It's funny, this post came about thanks to a  blog entry I "stumbled upon".  It's a (rather negative) review. It's too bad the writer can't spell "Grammys".

Facebook is FUBAR

I keep reading stories around teh Internets™ about how Facebook randomly "punishes" its users for some supposed bad deed, but won't tell them what it is.

Well now it's my turn.  About a week or so ago, I added (or tried to add) friends via the "find a friend" feature (where you copy addresses from your Yahoo!/MSN/Gmail address books).

I gained 4-5 friends this way.

Today one of my frineds on Facebook announced she had a new ID and asked us to add her. So, I followed her instructions only to be greeted with this.:

(Note, In order to protect privacy I've obscured the user's name and photo in this screenshot).

Now as I said, I've added nobody in several days.

And no I'm not going to bother contacting Facebook about it. I've read users that have ended up with zapped accounts when they tried.  I'll just simply ask the user to add me.

But is this FUBAR or what?

The end of an era.

I somehow overlooked (till now) this rather significant (semi-recent) news from the world of teh Internets™.

Netscape Logo from 1994Final Netscape Logo

On 28 December 2007, AOL/Netscape announced the end of an era. There will be no further development of Netscape after this month.  The current version (9.0.5  - I'll bet you didn't even realize there was a current version - if you're old enough to remember Netscape from it's "glory days") will continue to receive security patches through the end of this month. All support for Netscape software will cease on 1 February 2008.

Back in the stone age (years, before Dubya pluarlized "Internet"), Netscape was the browser. I remember using its 0.x beta versions in 1994 (before the release of 1.0) on Windows 3.1(!).

I abandoned Mosaic (the original graphical browser) for Netscape (whose developers - notably Marc Andreessen - were also the original developers of Mosaic).

Netscape kicked ass for a few years. Then it all went downhill.  The first "browser wars" began. Microsoft shoved Internet Explorer down everyone's throat.  By 1998-99 Internet Explorer was king. And frankly, Internet Explorer was the better browser by then.

Then in late 1998, AOL bought Netscape Communications.  Netscape fans feared the worst. And AOL did neglect Netscape as feared (and laid off most of it's employees over time). However, the good news was that earlier in 1998 AOL had released the Netscape source code (and to make a long story short) users of Firefox and Thunderbird today have AOL(!) to thank for that (I hate to admit that, but it's true).

Despite the Netscape browser being virtually ignored for years, I'm still sad to see it go.

So for you wise folks who today use Firefox and/or Thunderbird, you can thank the "original" Netscape.  Without Netscape there would have been no Mozilla.org, which is where this most excellent software comes from.

Thank you Netscape, and R.I.P.

WTF is Wrong With People?!?!?

A Hoax Turned Fatal Draws Anger but No Charges
Published: November 28, 2007
The suicide of a 13-year-old girl after an Internet hoax that was hatched by an adult has brought outrage but officials say the hoax wasn’t illegal.

Here is the full story.

I hope karma bites this woman hard in the ass someday.

Which one of these do you like the best?

Every year I buy a Christmas present for myself. This year I've decided I'm going to get myself a watch.

I've narrowed it down to two that I like, but I can't make up my mind which I want.

Here are pictures of both of them. Which do you like best? I'm only comparing looks now. Nothing else.

Thanks.

Here are "Driving Directions" from Miami, Florida, USA to São Paulo, Brazil, courtesy of Google Maps.

You can breeze over the directions. The important part of them is @ #10 (it is highlighted in the screnshot). :)

Kids say e-mail is, like, soooo dead????

Just ask a group of teen Internet entrepreneurs, who readily admit that traditional e-mail is better suited for keeping up professional relationships or communicating with adults.”

This is nuts! You can’t archive a conversation on MySpace or Facebook. They are fine for brief stuff but for anything more than a few paragraphs - not using email is insane.

Phoenix (where I live), Police Chase. 2 TV news helicopters crashed covering it.

The helicopters were following the chase from the air.

Freaky and sad.

Reporters who knew them covering the story and then starting to cry. At that point they (of course) would cut away to anchors.

It's been on TV for hours (as of this writing) non-stop on all Phoenix stations. They are (were) all streaming it on the web.

I cry at the drop of a hat, so I've cried on and off watching this. I almost never watch the news (I get it online) so I didn't know who these people were but it's still sad nevertheless.

Warning: Reformatting a hard drive could cost billions!

I just happened upon a news story that I apparently overlooked. It's now 3 months old, but it's still fascinating.

Perhaps you know that sinking feeling when a single keystroke accidentally destroys hours of work. Now imagine wiping out a disk drive containing information for an account worth $38 billion (€29 billion). That is what happened to a computer technician reformatting a disk drive at the Alaska Department of Revenue. While doing routine maintenance work, the technician accidentally deleted applicant information for an oil-funded account — one of Alaska residents' biggest perks — and mistakenly reformatted the backup drive, as well....
